Take the Mayor’s 5K Challenge this Sunday!
Registration is available at the Early Bird Packet Pick-up sessions on Friday (11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and Saturday (9 a.m. to noon) at Public Square Park. Walk-up registration will be available, beginning at noon, on Sunday.
The 3.1-mile event starts on the Public Square Park at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13. Already, over 4,000 people have registered and over 250 teams are participating. Yesterday, the Tennessean published a story about the growing use of Apps for healthy choices.
“Dr. Mathew Ninan could tell a 19-year-old patient wasn’t really listening to his spiel about not smoking, so he said the magic word: app.
Ninan, a thoracic surgeon at Centennial Medical Center, prescribed a smartphone app with a whole toolbox of information to help people toss away their cigarettes for good. It even has a link to a Facebook support group.
‘He was the ideal candidate,’ Ninan said. ‘He’s always got his iPhone in his left hand.’

Step up to the challenge with Mayor Karl Dean!
More than 4,000 Nashvillians walked over 100,000 miles this past spring and summer as part of the Mayor’s Walk 100 Miles health initiative. Now the Mayor is stepping up the challenge by asking Nashvillians to join him for a 5K walk or run on Sunday, Nov. 13.
Join him as he kicks off a free nine-week training program in preparation for the 5K event:
